Preparing for your first support visit

A first visit can feel like having a stranger in your home. A little preparation turns it into the start of a good working relationship.

Before the visit

  • Decide what you would like help with on the day, even if it is small.
  • Jot down routines, preferences and anything that makes you uncomfortable.
  • Tell us about pets, parking, access and anyone else who will be home.
  • Have any medication information, care plans or communication aids ready to show.

During the visit

Expect your worker to listen more than they talk. They will ask how you like things done and may take notes so the next visit is familiar. You are in charge: if something feels wrong, say so straight away, or tell us afterwards.

After the visit

Think about three things: Did you feel respected? Did the worker do what you asked, the way you asked? Would you be happy to see them again? Share the answers with us, honestly. We would rather hear it early.

For family members and carers

Try to let the participant lead the conversation, even if you usually speak for them. The relationship that matters most is between the participant and the worker.
